5 Good Women's Down Coats for Winter 2015
Are You Down with Winter Fashion?
Winter is a time for fun, friends, snow, and of course fashion. If you're looking for a down coat this season, then I can certainly help you.
I've looked through hundreds of down coats and found a few that I absolutely love including down jacket/coat models from Tommy Hilfiger, Phistic, Michael Kors, and Eddie Bauer.
Phistic Women's Long Hooded Puffer Down Coat with Faux Fox Fur Trim
This long down coat is very stylish. It features a zippered front with snap placket to keep the wind out, two outer pockets, a knit collar, and 600 fill power (which means that the coat is fairly warm). The coat measures about 48.5 inches from the center back to the lower hem-it'll definitely keep your legs toasty! The top half of the coat is tailored to give it a bit of shape, rather than looking like a sleeping bag with a hood.
This coat has plenty of other interesting features, like a "zip bib" layer, which means that it has a vest-like layer underneath the coat-almost like two coats in one. The knit cuffs and knit turtleneck collar ensure that wind won't blow up your sleeves or down around your neck. The coat's filling is 90% down and 10% feather, so it holds in body heat very well. The snaps down the front also help keep wind from blowing in through the zipper. Even the pockets are warm, with a nice, soft lining.
Because of the high fill power and the real fur lining around the hood, this coat is a bit more expensive than some other down coats, but the quality is worth the price. Keep in mind that this coat's sizes run small, so be sure to order up a size.
My Personal Favorite
Michael Kors Women's Wanda Down Coat Jacket
Some down coats are really long, which is great for warmth, but not so great for ease of movement. This gorgeous down coat is about mid-thigh length, so it's easy to walk around in, but still long enough to provide some good warmth. It's 100% polyester, machine washable (everyone loves clothes that are machine washable!), and has a faux fur trim around the hood. The hood zips off easily, leaving a classy standing collar.
This coat is contoured around the waist, which makes for a classic feminine shape. It has short zippers at the bottom on the sides, which can be zipped open to provide even better walking room. The waist pockets are deep and warm; the chest pockets, on the other hand, are fairly small, so they may be more decorative than functional. This coat can easily be dressed up or down, to fit almost any occasion. One point to consider is that the coat's hood is large, and it doesn't have a pull string to tighten it.
This coat runs a little small, so be sure to refer to the sizing chart before you order.
Tommy Hilfiger Women's Belted / Hooded Down Jacket
For a brand-name coat, this hip-length down jacket is quite reasonably priced. The outside is 100% polyester, and the fill is 60% down, 40% feathers. The coat is also machine washable, which is always a plus. And it's water resistant; makes sense, for a coat that will probably be worn in rain or snow. The hood is lined with velboa-a sturdy, low pile, faux fur-on the inside, and has longer faux fur around the edge. You can keep the hood on or zip it off for a more or less sporty look.
This coat's stitching is good quality, so wind won't get in through its seams. The zipper is sturdy, too, and the buttons are easy to manage. It's less streamlined than some of the more fitted down coats, but it's not so puffy that you'll look like a marshmallow. Having a 60% down fill makes for a warm, but not toasty, coat. And the length-28 inches from the center back to the bottom hem-hits around the lower hips, so the length is very flattering.
The sizing on this coat is a bit small, especially through the shoulders, which makes it difficult to wear over sweatshirts or sweaters. This can, of course, be avoided by ordering up a size.
Eddie Bauer Essential Down Duffle
A "duffle" coat is usually made from thick wool, with large toggles down the front. By that description, this coat is technically not a duffle, but don't let that put you off-it's still a great coat. It's made of polyester, with StormRepel DWR (durable water-repellant) finish. That's sure to keep the rain and snow out!
This coat falls to below the knee, and it features 550-fill goose down, so it will keep you warm from head to toe (well, almost). The hood is detachable from the coat, and the faux-fur ruff is detachable from the hood, which is a nice feature. The pockets and collar are lined with Sherpa fleece for extra coziness. And this coat has been arctic tested -30F.
With all of these features, this coat is perfect for even the coldest climates. Sizes run fairly true.
